Pumalin park

02 Dec

The largest private park in the world, Pumalin was bought by an american billioner and turned into a nature park. Some of it was covered in ash from Chaiten volcano in the last two years, and is now being reopened, although most is accessible only on foot or by boat. We drove thru an amazing rainforest on dirt roads and slept in a campground that’s still closed. We were the only tourists.

Santa Barbara beach

02 Dec

Some book mentioned that dolphins sometimes swim right up to this beach, which we treated like an ‘urban’ legend. The beach itself is gorgeous, with black sand and rocks (thanks to the nearby Chaiten volcano) and we spent the night at an old b&b overlooking the beach. The second time we went there, Yael was walking on the beach searching for rocks and talking on the phone, when a group of dolphins came 10 meters from her for 10 minutes without her noticing . Until i ran up to her with the camera, shouting…

Ran is somewhere on the way to Israel

02 Dec

We said goodbye to ran. He was last seen taking the ferry to Port Montt, Chile. He was carrying an apple, 2 granola bars and a Hebrew-Spanish dictionery. Then he was supposed to find the bus station, buy a ticket to Bariloche, fly the next day to Buenos Aires and get on a flight to Israel the day after. All to get back early to help with his wedding…
We never heard form him since…

Camping underneath the volcano

29 Nov

Found a campsite with a view of the volcano from the tents. Ran was hearing some rumblings which we were sure were a waterfall or frogs. The next day someone in town asked if we weren’t afraid of the volcano, since it made eruption noises all night. Told him we weren’t afraid…

Chaiten, a ex-town beneath the volcano

29 Nov

Arrived at chaiten, which was evacuated in 2008 after the volcano erupted (erupted again in 2009). 4000 people moved away, 80 are left. Electricity from generators, water sometimes, basic food. Stayed in the area for 3 days waiting for a ferry out. The ship company wasn’t exactly sure when the ferry will arrive and if it is a car ferry.

Falcons

29 Nov

We are shadowed by falcons everywhere we stop here (or even on the ferry)
